Hello best life seekers!
Only a few days remain until 2019. Are you thinking about your goals for next year and need some great ideas? Here are 5 golden suggestions for starting 2019 off right and getting your head into the game for living the life you’ve always wanted. Tackling all five resolutions might be biting off more than you can chew but any one of these suggestions if implemented will definitely improve the quality of your life. So here they are!
#1 – Resolve to Adopt a Whole Foods Diet
Good health is our number one asset. Diet plays a major role in the overall quality of our health, impacting our physical well-being, digestive ease, weight, skin clarity, blood pressure and many more bodily conditions. Eating whole foods – fruits, vegetables, legumes, pulses, seeds and nuts – can prevent or ease diet-related illnesses like many cancers, diabetes, stroke, and kidney disease. Did you know that your diet also affects your mood and mental clarity? As you can see, how we feed ourselves is fundamental to every aspect of our lives.
You don’t have to go full vegetarian either to reap many of the rewards that a whole foods diet brings. The most long-lived populations in the world eat diets high in whole foods. Some like the Okinawans of Japan and Sardinians of Italy eat meat and seafood but not to the high degrees of Americans. These groups enjoy delicious meals that are not overly processed and their health and well-being are the highest measured on the planet. Why not take a cue from them and start adopting a whole foods diet in 2019?
#2 – Resolve to Adopt the 70/30 Rule and Take Control of Your Money
The vast majority of Americans don’t have a monthly budget and most are in debt and live paycheck to paycheck. Money problems is a leading cause of individual stress and relationship issues. If you’re struggling with and stressed over money, resolve to tackle your personal finances in 2019. It’s a lot easier than the “pros” would lead you to believe. By implementing the 70/30 Rule I went from six figure debt to financially independent in less than 10 years so believe me when I say righting your financial ship is possible.
Personal finance and financial literacy sound daunting but require no more math than what you learned by fifth grade. Start off 2019 by assessing your monthly take home income and expenses. See where you spend or stash your money. Financial aptitude is what you do with money once you make it, how you keep people from taking it from you, how to keep it longer, and how you make money work hard for you. Ideally you want to get to a point where you spend only 70% of your take home money and invest the remaining 30% in money-making enterprises or use part of the 30% to pay down debt if your monthly debt payments exceed 35% of your income. Do this in 2019 and you will never live paycheck to paycheck again.
#3 – Resolve to Learn How to Be Happy
Did you know that happiness is learnable? We’re all born with a natural disposition, some more on the sunny side and others in the darker, more cynical realms. This disposition can change, which is a relief to know! Mine went from the “I am the hole beneath the butt of life” realm to pretty much happy or at least content most of the time. People actually call me an optimist when for most of my life they saw me as quite negative.
You too can go from stressed out, anxious, upset and depressed to feeling happy, content and an overall sense of well-being. Diet impacts our moods so always start there but our mental world greatly impacts our happiness. What we focus on, believe, expect of ourselves and others, as well as how personally we take everyday hassles and interactions control whether we are happy or upset. For example, take a rain shower. Put two people in it. One might enjoy the sound and the way the colors become more vivid but the other will see it as a hassle and be miserable. It’s just a rain shower but even in this simple situation, the enjoyment of life is starkly different. Now extrapolate this to everything that happens in a day. Where do you fall when it comes to seeing every event as either good, bad or neutral? Start there.
In 2019, make it your goal to study happiness just as you would learn any other subject. To be happy we can’t think the way we’ve been thinking until now. We must change our internal monologues. Here are some great reads to get you going. My current favorites are Joy On Demand by Chade-Meng Tan and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson.
#4 – Resolve to Meditate 100 Hours in 2019
If you’re seeking peace and calm in what seems like a chaotic and crazy world, meditation can provide needed sanctuary. With meditation, our minds and bodies get to rest even if only for 5 minutes. This allows us to recharge and rejuvenate. Go deeper with meditation and you develop calm, clarity, concentration, ease, serenity, peace and an oasis of well-being. Benefits of meditation start immediately – even if you only manage 15 seconds. At least then you’re taking a few breaths and detaching from the busy world around you that clamors for your non-stop attention yet rarely gives you anything back of substance.
You can resolve to start a meditation habit but why not put a number on your goal to make it more concrete? According to research cited by Chade-Meng Tan, author of Joy on Demand, just eight weeks of meditation is enough to cause significant changes in the brain associated with increased happiness. Many people aspire to meditate 15 to 30 minutes daily. If you meditate 15-20 minutes a day for a year, you’ll hit 100 hours. End 2019 calmer, more at peace and centered, and with sharper concentration and higher life enjoyment by taking up a meditation habit.
#5 – Resolve to Re-energize Your Spirit
Are you feeling detached and seeking more purpose or meaning? We are not just our minds and bodies. Not to get all mystical on you but we have a spiritual side as well. That doesn’t mean we necessarily need organized religion but our sense of purpose, meaning and connection come from our ties to family, friends, our community but also from our sense of the greater existence around us and our relationship to it. For some, joining a spiritual community brings a sense of connection – whether that’s a church, temple or meditation group. Others prefer prayer, walking in nature or volunteering for good causes. We recharge and revitalize when we find that connection to something greater than ourselves.
Blue Zone populations – those long-lived and happier groups of healthy people around the globe – all share the trait of community belonging and spirituality. Maybe they’re onto something. In 2019, why not commit to re-connect with your place in existence? Find those people or activities that give your soul a charge and a sense of belonging. Your well-being will definitely benefit.
Make 2019 Awesome
With each new year we get a fresh slate to start new projects or re-commit to old ones. The starting date is arguably arbitrary but framing our time and commitments gives structure to our goals and dreams, making them more achievable. In 2019, challenge yourself to put into action a resolution that will move you toward your dreams and aspirations. Any one of these five New Year’s resolutions will make you stronger and happier. Which one inspires you the most? Go with it and enjoy its adventure in 2019.
